Galasso to Transfer to Syracuse

Written by Robert Bacaj on .

A week after the attackman was given a release from his scholarship at North Carolina, Nicky Galasso has confirmed to Inside Lacrosse he's transferring to Syracuse. The Long Island native had previously expressed interest in the Orange, citing a desire to play close to home, but not at Hofstra.

Galasso does not have to sit out a year because he didn't pick an ACC school. However, Syracuse is joining that conference for the 2014 season, Galasso's senior year.

He was the 2011 ACC Freshman of the Year after being Inside Lacrosse's top recruit in the class of 2010. Galasso had 56 points on 24 goals and 32 assists in his first year. He battled a foot injury last year and only finished with nine points on six goals and three assists.

Galasso joins an Orange squad that lost two seniors -- Tommy Palasek and Tim Desko -- from last season. However, it also gained another transfer in former Johns Hopkins attackman Mike Daniello.

Wasson Re-Signs After Cancer

Written by Robert Bacaj on .

SWARM PRESS RELEASE

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Less than a year after being diagnosed with cancer, Minnesota Swarm defenseman Joe Wasson today re-signed a one-year contract with the team, noting that his health has returned to full strength since undergoing chemo and radiation therapy treatments earlier this year.

“It feels good,” said Wasson in regards to re-signing with the Swarm. “I had a big interruption in my life, but things are back on track and the way they were before. Everything is looking good.”

Wasson’s diagnosis came at an unfortunate time, as he learned the news shortly after he had earned a spot on the Swarm’s 2012 practice squad. Having grown up watching both his uncle and brother play in the NLL, Wasson’s chance to play professionally was put on hold last season as he underwent treatment.

“It was definitely tough, especially with the timing because I had just made the team,” Wasson said. “Everything was going pretty good in my life. It was definitely shocking news.”

Through it all, the Peterborough, Ontario native remained mentally tough and determined to keep his dream of playing professional lacrosse alive. “It was a goal of mine to get back,” he said.

Wasson, 23, received some encouraging news when his doctors informed him that his form of cancer was curable, and not life- threatening. “It made it a lot easier for me to deal with it mentally, knowing that my life was not in danger,” Wasson said. “But, (I was told) it might take a little bit of time, but I’d get over this and be okay.”

With his family, friends, teammates, and coaches supporting him every step of the way during his treatments, Wasson was flown out by the team to Xcel Energy Center last April to attend the Swarm’s Hive Cares Night, an annual event that helps raise money for cancer research. That evening, the Swarm wore No. 16 patches in honor of Wasson and with their teammate in attendance and in the back of their minds, the Swarm defeated the Philadelphia Wings 15-10.

“It was really unbelievable,” said Wasson, who along with his family, were honored during the game’s ceremonial ball drop. “I’ve never had anything like that; I’m a quiet, shy guy. I had never really been in the spotlight before. It was a really touching moment for me and my entire family.”

Swarm head coach Joe Sullivan said that “it was an emotional night” for everyone involved. “He was a kid that grew up in my hometown and when you see a kid with that disease, you only hope for the best.”

With the opportunity to once again fulfill his dream of playing in the NLL, Wasson said he is eager return to training camp this year. His coach, is equally as excited. Last year, the 6-foot-1, 155-pound defenseman impressed Sullivan with his knack for making plays on defense with his physical play and ball awareness skills.

“This is a really good story about a young man, who quietly just wants to play in this league and is constantly reaching out to us to make sure that we know that he wants to be here,” Sullivan said. “He’s asked me numerous times now to hold a spot for him in training camp so that he can prove that he can beat this thing.”

After completing a month-long radiation treatment in May, the final stage of his treatments, Wasson said it took him a few weeks to recover and get back in shape. Since then, Wasson has received positive news from his doctors. “I went back at the end of the summer and they said that it’s going away, and I haven’t had any ill effects since then,” Wasson said. “I’m perfectly, 100-percent healthy.”

The one-year contract for Wasson is currently pending league approval.

Calgary Plays It Safe with Dobbie

Written by Gabe Altieri on .

Calgary did the right thing, Monday. The team re-signed Dane Dobbie to a one-year contract. The forward has a tremendous amount of skill and the prime of his career is still to come, but there's more that factors into this equation than just talent.

Dobbie was fantastic in his first few seasons. He had at least 75 points from 2009 to 2011. Things changed in 2012 when he managed just 50. A big reason for the lower output was injuries that kept him out for over a month of the season. Though Dobbie came back and was still very effective (42 points in the final nine games) the risk of reinjury is always there. It's smart for the Roughnecks to play it safe because they have options.

Calgary is filled with prolific laxers like Shawn Evans. He led a group of six Roughnecks that scored over 50 points, including Dobbie. With a group of guys that know how to find the back of the net, there's no reason for this team to panic in handling the lefty. If he has a big year with no injuries, you can still pay him the money.

Jacksonville Suspends Operations

Written by Robert Bacaj on .

The Jacksonville Bullies have stopped operating for the remainder of the 2012 PLL season according to people within the organization. They end their season 3-1 and leave just two teams in the Professional Lacrosse League.

The Bullies are the second team to stop operations this year, after the Jersey Rascals stopped before the season got underway. This leaves two teams -- the Reading Rockets and Charlotte Copperheads -- to finish the league's inaugural season.

Not including Jax, there are three teams set to join the league next season if it continues.

Edmonton Signs Matthews

Written by Robert Bacaj on .

The Edmonton Rush have announced the signing of the NLL's first overall pick Mark Matthews to a one-year deal. The University of Denver product is considered the consensus best prospect in this year's draft class.

"It feels great to have the formalities completed and I look forward to training camp in November," said Matthews in a team press release.

The 6'4'', 230-pound forward has a stellar box lacrosse background, having won the Minto Cup with the Whitby Warriors in 2011 and with Coquitlam in 2010. Matthews also has a great field background after closing his Denver career on a 45-game point streak that left him with 216 points and 155 goals.

He also played nine games for the MLL's Denver Outlaws, scoring 28 points on 19 goals and nine assists.

Lax in Washington

Written by Gabe Altieri on .

College lacrosse took another big step this weekend. Denver and Maryland played the Seatown Classic in Tukwila, Washington. Yes, it was only fall ball, but still it was the first time a game was played in the state. That's another thing the sport can check off it's list.

The matchup had plenty going for it. First, it featured Maryland, who was the NCAA runner-up the past two seasons, against Denver, the staple for lax out west. Second, there were a ton of people on hand. 3,589 people took in the action at Starfire Sports Complex Stadium, located about ten miles south of Seattle. Finally, Maryland's Landon Carr scored a goal. He's the only Washington native on the field.

Once again, it's only a small step. The game still has a long way to go to have a strong presence in the west. At the same time, though, the fact that so many people came out to see a fall ball match is a promising sign.

SU Alumni Uniforms Take the Weekend

Written by Gabe Altieri on .

Derek Maltz didn't take all the glory during Syracuse's Alumni game this weekend. The uniforms the former stars were wearing were what really impressed. Don't believe me? Check them out for yourself.

The alumni held an early 1-0 lead in the game, but fell 14-9 thanks to four scores by Maltz. The scoreboard says they lost, but their uniforms say they lost in style.

NCAA Preview: Duke

Written by Gabe Altieri on .

Duke lacrosse is just two years removed from a national championship. The team's made it to the last three final fours and has won 45 games since 2010. The Blue Devils lost stars like Rob Rotanz and C.J. Costibile, but they still have plenty of fire power returning in 2013. Here's a look at their star studded group.

The Attack

The unit had the teams two leading scorers on the team in 2012. Jordan Wolf and Christian Walsh combined for 114 points. Of course, it doesn't stop there. Duke welcomes freshman phenom Case Matheis in 2013. Matheis is the top freshman according to Inside Lacrosse's Power 100 freshman.

The Midfield

With this group, look no further than seniors Jake Tripucka and David Lawson. Tripucka was fantastic in 2012, he tallied at least one point in 14 games. Lawson was also pretty consistent. He managed five multi-point games and picked up 30 ground balls.

The Defense

This is probably the weakest unit on the team but has a lot of potential. Henry Lobb and Luke Duprey are both primed to have break-out years in 2013. Keep an eye out for those two.

Goaltending

Dan Wigrizer returns for his senior season. He was great in 2012, stoping 129 shots in 14 games. The netminder finished allowing under nine goals-per-game and with how good this offense will be this season, that should be more than enough to win a lot of games.

Face-offs

The Blue Devils lost a lot when Costibile graduated. Just last season, he took 272 faceoffs and won 52.6% of them. Those are big shoes to fill, but the Blue Devils do bring back Brendan Fowler. The junior took 149 face-offs in 2012 and won 60.4%. Plus, he's had time to learn from Costabile. Duke should be just fine.

With all this fire power, the boys from Durham shouldn't miss a beat in 2013. Don't be surprised if they're right back in the Final Four.
